Was there an accident at Langley Mill in 1888 ?
posted on: 8/17/2008 8:13:19 PM

Hi,
I have a distant ancestor called JOSEPH BROWN who lived on the Cromford Road,Heanor. It was possibly at number 33.The 1891 census shows his widow ,Sarah Ann living at that house number but unfortunately the 1881 census doesn't have a house number. He died in 1888 and as he was a coalminer I was wondering if he might have died in an accident.I'm told if he lived on the Cromford Road the Mine is likely to be Langley Mill.As I can't afford a death certificate I'm having to guess at this but FreeBMD says he died aged 34 in the June 1/4 which covers April,May and June of 1888.
So could anyone help me find him if he did die in an accident or if it wasn't an accident then at least confirm for me which mine he worked in.
Many thanks to anyone who can help me,it's much appreciated,
Trisha.

Cromford Rd is in Langley Mill not heanor. In 1888 I don't think there was a colliery in langley mill.
There were collieries in Langley,Marlpool Derbys and Moorgreen notts, which are not too far from langley Mill

Bailey Brook Colliery was sunk in 1828 Known Initialy as Heanor then Langley but not the New Langley Colliery near the old Baths This Closed in 1938
Plumtree Colliery would be near to Cromford Road but i have no dates for this

I am pretty sure that it was Bailey Brook that closed in 1938. New Langley, near the baths, closed in 1960 following its merger with Ormonde Colliery. Plumptre Pit, also known as Cockerhouse or New England, was situated on Cockerhouse Road at Eastwood, to the rear of Eastwood Hall and closed in 1911. The dirt tip from Moorgreen Colliery now covers the site.

Well done Jenny
Albert Harriman in the accident at Plumptre was injured -but survived

It doesn't look like Joseph brown was killed in a colliery accident

Hope Sue looks in soon

There was a coal mine in Langley Mill. It was sunk in 1828 but I have not been able to find out any more information. There was also a mine at Stoneyford which closed in 1886

The death certificate should indicate if Mr Brown was killed in a mining accident.
