Brierley Wood mine C1890
posted on: 2/28/2009 1:11:26 PM

This is a long shot because it relates to a mine in the Dronfield area of Derbyshire.

I am trying to find out more about the mine, it's production, how long it was worked, ownership, anything..

If any of you mining experts can help, I'd be very grateful.

Best regards
Martin

Andy bridgewater's site at http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/colliery (address not linked) is a good one to start at for North Derbyshire coal mines. More useful words for your search engine are,

1 aditnow

2 chmrc

3 pdhms

The above info should pull out all the useful info that is on the net regarding Brieley Wood Mine.

There was a mine near Sutton in Ashfield that had a similar name which was working about that time.

Back again, Brierley Wood located as being due north west of Whittingon. The centre of the wood being about 3/4s of a mile from Whittington. 1900 map shows old shafts, in the area called The Brushes, to east of wood before the railway line. Just outside of the southern edge of the wood are the Dunston Colliery (disused) and the Albert Colliery working. Since the site of Dunston Colliery is closer to the wood then this may have been known locally as Brierley Wood Colliery.

Using a modern street atlas of Derbyshire I would place Brierley Wood (not marked on modern map) as being in the area of the junction of the A61 and B6057. The area known as The Brushes is marked on the map.I suspect development work has wiped out the wood and the colliery sites being recovered to become industrial estates.
