Any Fletcher family out there????
posted on: 4/7/2009 3:05:03 PM

Hello, I have recently traced my family history, and am direc t decendent of John Fletcher, who was apparently one of the most prosperous men of his time. He died in 1734. He had 3 children, Robert, John and Elizabeth Fletcher. Robert had 2 children, Goodere and Samuel Fletcher. I understand that both John and his grandson Samuel were Sherrifs of Nottingham and were gentrified - the gentrification of the Fletchers ending with Samuel. Apparently Robert was born at Stainsby House (pulled down in the 70s) and died at Owlgrave Hall in Heanor. I have managed to find out quite a bit about the Fletchers, but wondered if anyone out there knew anything else, or where I could find any portraits/photographs of them. Thanks in advance.

Thank you so much for your reply. I had a look, but the post is mainly about the Fletcher sisters marrying the Slack family. Useful though. This is such a great site, so much information. It seems John Fletcher was quite a guy - he left over £50,000 in his will in 1734, which would be the equivalent of over £80,000,000 today!!! Apparently, he built Heanor Hall. I live in London, (born in Yorkshire, Elizabeth Ann Fletcher was my great-grandmother) but would love to come to Heanor and do some digging around, it seems like a wonderful place.

Have you had a look at the "Access to Archives" site, if not then use the phrase in inverted commas in your seach engine to find the home page. By using the words "fletcher heanor" in the site search facility you will pull out reference to all the bits and bobs relating to your search words. Be prepared to wade through the dross and you will be rewarded with lots of info.

When you have opened an entry it can be saved by going to top left of screen. Select file and this will open a drop down menu. This gives a list of options, select save then text and the file will be saved as a file with a txt extension. This can then be opened up in Notepad or just about most word processors. If you use the print option you can then study the file and make comments on the print out.

Out of interest is there an Alan Fletcher born around 1950 in your family tree. He used to live with his mother,(widow) in the farm cottage terrace in the grounds of Shipley Hall. His mother remarried and had the tenancy of the Queens Head in Marlpool in the mid 60s.
