replied on: 5/2/2003 7:21:18 PM Heanor Urban District Council bought "Heanor Hall and premises now leased from Mr Mundy" in July 1905. The main purpose was the development of a Secondary School, but the building of a Fire Station was mentioned right from the start. The total cost of the purchase was £4000, for an area of 13000 square yards. Although that was in 1905, the building on Wilmot Street shows the date 1925. I don't know what happened in the intervenig 20 years. I have also posted a message in the Langley Mill folder about a fire at the Pottery where Heanor Fire Brigade were involved, in 1940. Hope this is of some interest |

replied on: 1/31/2008 5:14:33 PM Fireman’s Funeral 9th Feb 1912 R / H News Last Friday afternoon the interment of the remains of Mr. Edward Davis, who had charge of Heanor fire engine, and resided in a house adjoining Heanor Technical Schools, where the fire engine station was situated, took place at Heanor Cemetery. Deceased, who had been ailing about a week, died rather suddenly on the previous Tuesday, and was given a fireman’s funeral. The coffin containing the body was borne on the fire engine, drawn by a pair of black horses. Capt J. Holbrook and Vice-Capt H. Gregory, together with about twenty firemen, belonging Heanor, Codnor and Langley Mill fire brigades, attended, and officiated as bearers. Rev. F. Whitehead was the officiating minister, and read the committal service at the graveside. The chief mourners were the widow and family and friends. The Independent Order of Odd-fellows were also represented. The brass plate on the coffin bore the inscription, “Edward Davis, died Jan. 30th 1912 aged 53 years.” There were several beautiful wreaths including one from Captain, Vice- captain, and Members of Heanor Fire Brigade, with the deepest sympathy |
