| luce Quote | Reply | | families around derbyshire posted on: 5/19/2003 11:35:08 AM My mother has in her possession an autograph book from around the late 1800's. In it are entries from a number of persons from around derby but I can seem to find no information on them. I wondered if anyone could help me as we are not local and are not related to these names in any way. The book is owned by somebody from Langley, Marlpool n. derby but I cannot decipher the name. It looks a bit like C Mollmoor but its hard to tell. There are entries from a family named Bailey(A.d Bailey, Ella Bailey from The hill Sandiacre, H. Dora Bailey, L.W Bailey, Mary Bailey and Ada E Bailey. There is also an Elizabeth Hetcher from The Hill Sandiacre. An entry from a Geo Robinson from Marlpool,Winifred Robinson,Lilian M Robinson, Mary and John Holmes from Allandale House, Heanor. There are a couple of entries from a family named Cahert but this name could be wrong, its a bit hard to read. There is a K Linsey, Ursina Fapp,Louise Sisson, Victoire Otz, Susie Miller, Cyril Allen, There are alot of entries from Heanor Hall from some people from switzerland but I could find no information on this either. Marlepool House is also mentioned. I would be greatful for any information. thanks Lucinda |

replied on: 5/19/2003 7:00:13 PM Lucinda A fascinating book you have there. Most of the names mean nothing to me, but some certainly do! John Holmes, of Allandale House, is known as "Heanor's Grand Old Man." He lived from 1820 to 1919, and was something of a town celebrity - on the Royal Visit of King George V in 1914, he was presented to the King. There have been quite a few articles in the Heanor and District Local History Society about Mr Holmes - I could get you copies of the main articles if you wanted (Please contact me by e-mail) In relation to Kate Linsey and Ursina Fopp, they ran a private school at Heanor Hall, which probably explains why there are so many other entries with that address - no doubt the pupils all getting in on the act! The first mention of the school that I am aware of was in 1890. By 1893, the Board of Health leased Heanor Hall from Edward Miller Mundy for the purpose of "a school of Higher Education in Heanor and District." I do not know whether this means that Misses Linsey and Fopp had left by that time. This certainly fits in with your dating of the book. Again, there are quite a few articles about Heanor Hall in our newsletters. Although not directly related to this, I know that at Aldercar Hall, a few miles away, they had a Swiss Teacher - perhaps a common thing in those days. I am sure that the Society would be grateful for a copy of the autograph book, and may well be able to assist further. We don't have another Committee meeting until July, but I shall mention it then. Please get in touch if there is anything more I can help with, or if you think it would be possible for us to obtain a copy. Thanks Robert |

replied on: 5/21/2003 7:09:10 PM Well, if it was Clara Holbrook, she, too, has in a small way added a little to the local history of the area, as there is a street named after her, "Clara Mount Road." She had a sister, Ella, after whom Ella Bank Road is named. Like John Holmes, quite a lot is known about John Holbrook, who was surveyor for both the Heanor Urban District Council and the Butterley Company. His name crops up in the Society's newsletters on a frequent basis, so, if you want any specific background information, please let me know and I will see what I can do. |

replied on: 5/23/2003 8:07:10 AM If, and I think we are right to do so, we go down the route of looking at this as being the autograph book of somebody pretty well off, then the difficult to read name of "Cahert" is almost certainly going to be Calvert. William Calvert was the sone of the founder of the pottery at Langley Mill. By the time this autograph book was made, the pottery ran under the name Calvert & Lovatt. It would be interesting to know which Calverts signed the book. |

replied on: 5/26/2003 8:06:09 PM W.H. Calvert was William Henry, the Pottery Owner, who, in 1891, lived at Ashtree House, on what was then called "Eastwood Road", Langley Mill (an extension of Station Road, possibly what is now the start of Derby Road). I'm afraid I don't have the names of his children to hand, so can't check the ages for you at the moment. It's a truly fasinating topic you've started! |

replied on: 8/1/2003 9:37:34 AM Do you have any idea where the Calvert family originally came from or if indeed they were local? The reason that I ask this is as follows:- My wifes family name is Calvert and although they are now Swedish, the family originated in Scotland and moved to Sweden in the 19th. century. My mother in law has in her possession a 19th. century vase made by Langley Ware which she seems to think has some family connection, although whether this is purely by the original factory founders name, I do not know. |

replied on: 9/5/2004 11:47:05 AM For further information and photographs of the Calvert family can I suggest viewing a copy of 'Langley Mill Pottery - its history and wares' by John and Jenifer Gibling (ISBN 0 9542250 0 7). A whole chapter is dedicated to this topic. |

replied on: 11/30/2004 6:35:44 PM I am so sorry to have taken so long to use this fantastic site again. without it we would not know so much about this book. I have been at uni but am now home for a bit and my mother asked me to see if i could find anything further. I have been conducting my own research but have been unable to get much further. I have also been taking photos of the pages and trying to decipher some of them further. so far i am pretty certain that this is a young persons books as most of the entries are from children around 13 years old. this also makes sense as the schoolteachers both signed the book too. I have compiled an almost complete list of the people who signedthe book: A. d bailey ella bailey (both at 'the hill' sandiacre) H. Dora bailey L.w bailey Mary bailey Ada E bailey Elizabeth Hetcher or fletcher ('the hill'sandiacre) Geo robinson winifred robinson lillian robinson mary and john holmes k linsey ursina fapp louise sisson victoire otz susie miller cyril allen lois robinson florence crawford lily calvert w.h calvert l.b calvert Harry fisc most of these are mentioned above but i was wondering if the others were class members and if there are any records that i can get hold of? |
