replied on: 4/7/2008 4:12:27 AM Hi, I'm very late to this discussion. My ggm was Hannah Holmes & ggf Thomas Green. They were married in Selston, Notts 1858. Thos was born in Bolsover in 1837, but I've been unable to locate Hannah's baptism record. Upon reading the biography of John Holmes of Heanor, it occurred to me ggm Hannah might have been born there; however, the record remains elusive. Can anyone tell me if the christian names Aaron & Reuben are or were common in the Heanor area? Those were the names of two of Hannah's sons--remaining sons were John, Benjamin, George & Walter while her only daughter was Laura. If any of this rings a bell or if anyone can offer some advice with my quest, I'd be forever grateful. By the way, Hannah Holmes gave her birthdate as June 8, 1838. Thanks in advance. Ann |

replied on: 4/7/2008 11:41:57 AM Reuben and Aaron are not unusual names Do you have the marriage cert of your greatgrandparents? That would give father's names and occupations -and sometimes relatives are witnesses. Have you found Thomas and hannah on any census ? |

Their children in birth order: Benjamin & George were born in England, while the following were born in Pennsylvania: Laura Ann, Aaron, Thomas, Reuben, Walter. The family were Primitive Methodist church members. John Holmes, Heanor profile stated he was once a constable. replied on: 4/8/2008 10:19:16 AM It very much looks like the hannah you have in 1841 is "yours" - 1851 Underwood James Holmes Widow 52 FWK cotton Simeon 17 benjamin 15 Ann 22 Hannah 11 all b bagthorpe Notts Bagthorpe, underwood, Selston all are very close together Possibly her age was a year out on death cert? and she was b 1839 -there is a registration to ft that. Why not purchase Hannah's marriage cert -that would confirm father's name and occupation. |

replied on: 4/29/2008 9:46:41 PM Sorry if I'm going off the main subject but would this be the same John Holmes who was father in law to Edward Bonner?(pictured together in your publication "Around Old Heanor" It mentions beneath the photo that Edward Bonner lived at Highfields House, Marlpool at one time.) I'm interested because my grandmother Eliza Smith came from Bakewell to work in service there, I believe around 1907, and I've been unable to discover anything at all about her time there, her employer etc. I only know that Highfields stands at the end of Mill Road at the top of 'the commons' (the footpath leading to Lower Claramount Road) I just wondered if anyone has any knowledge to share please. |
