Closure of Langley Mill Police Station
replied on: 7/4/2003 11:35:09 PM Before the days of radios, what you describe was the standard system of working "points." Every police beat had a list of telephone kiosks where the bobby had to be at half-hourly intervals. Most of the time it was fairly easy for him, but some of them could be a bit of a rush, and woe betide him if he wasn't at his point if the Sergeant came to check, or if he was rung on the telephone. I'm not sure when radios were introduced, but the points system was phased out in the late 1970's. I know that the Police Station at Langley Mill was in use in 1901, but the Superintendent moved to Ilkeston in, I think, 1905. How much longer it was used as a nick, I really don't know - one day, when I have the time, I shall write to the present occupiers to see what they know about it. |
