My dad, Horace Brown, worked at Langley pit and used to come home at 10.30pm covered in pit dirt. I used to lie in bed awake, listening for him coming down the street in his pit boots! One Sunday morning when I was 12 he took me down the pit, presumably to discourage me from ever wanting to follow in his footsteps - it worked!
