Sukey's Hollow
replied on: 8/22/2004 8:32:53 AM

An old alternative name for the pond at Sukey's Hollow was "Susan's Well," so you are correct as to the derivation of the name Sukey.

Exactly why the area was so named has been discussed on a couple of occasions in the Society's newsletter.

The footpath used to be the shortest route between Heanor and Marlpool, and is said to have been the site of two murders in the 18th century. One of the victims was supposedly a servant girl named Sukey, and her ghost is said to haunt the hollow. Apparently, even as late as the 1930's, there were people who were afraid to take that route after dark.
