Favourite Old Heanor Memories
replied on: 1/23/2005 10:56:30 PM

As a pre-teen - sitting on a bench, with a friend, on the Town-ground in the early evening Summer sun, surrounded by the delicious scent of newly cut grass from the football pitch, watching the tennis players and waiting till the obligatory hard hit ball flew passed us again, which we would then duly collect and hand it back to the player(s), whose generosity stretched variously from a penny to a tanner at times, which we two shared equally between us.
When we estimated we'd earned enough wages for that particular evening, it was quickly to Sempers sweet shop, on Ray St; for a bag of toffees, whichever were the favourite at the time AND a dip into the 'Lucky Dip' jar. The price was threepence, a tanner or a bob.
If we were flush enough from the tennis ball collecting, it was the 'bob dip', reaching down the wide neck of the glass jar with trembling fingers, gripping your paper wrapped choice tightly and literally feeling thrilled to death as you withdrew the trembling hand from the neck of the jar.
Sometimes the excitement was worth it, at other times the threepenny-bit dip seemed more worth-while.

As a nearly teenager - going to the grounds of the Heanor Miners Welfare, on regular weekend evenings with the 'family', with fizzing lemonade to drink, the occasional shandy and (Smiths?) crisps to crunch, in between jumping into the high piles of freshly cut grass with the other young 'uns, all of us surrounded by that delicious scent of the newly cut grass. Time passed so quickly.

As a late-aged teenager - the week nights were for Loui's Milkbar and the Rock 'n' Roll delights and/or the enjoyable trek down to Loscoe Dam with the mixed gang members(Tomboys too) on warm Spring and long Summer nights.
Of course, at the weekends, it was up to the Ray's Arms for a quaff or four and afterwards - Elliotts, for an extremely enjoyable late night tuck-in. DE...licious.

Past the teens and marriage called, introducing the quiet delights of the old Woodlinkin Olde Worlde 'Thorn Tree', before the time came for the first of our journeys to far fields foreign.

If anyone else has any favourite, enjoyable reminiscences, please tag on.
Azzabuv.
