Heanor St. Lawrence - Empty Tomb
replied on: 2/28/2005 1:23:31 PM

In the burial ground at the back of the Church, stands an empty tomb. It is oblong in shape and its sides are approximately 4 feet in height. Its heavy stone lid is loose.

As youngsters, a group of us would sometimes enter the Churchyard from the small lane, which runs between the old houses and the edge of the Cemetery, shove the lid partly to one side and peer inside. In the corner of the tomb nearest the Church, appeared to be a square cut hole, approximately a foot and a half square.
After a few minutes, we would vacate the scene rapidly, because of the (no doubt imagined) noise coming from the small hole in the tomb's corner.
Does anyone have any historical information concerning this empty tomb I.E. the name of its original occupant and the date of construction?
Azzabuv.
