Evacuee Book
replied on: 3/16/2005 9:46:40 PM I've received the following email from Eric Singer, via the main web-site. Can anyone assist? "I was evacuated from S.London to Loscoe in 1944.Lived at 69 Loscoe Grange with the Hall family. Some years after the war and quite by chance I found a book in my local library, a novel(?) detailing the adventures of three evacuees. The setting was in Loscoe and I believe in Loscoe Grange. The three evacuees to my reading were myself, my sister and one of my friends. My sister, who has not seen the book thought that the only possible author must have been the gentleman our friend John was billeted with. Think this gent's name was something like Dodgson. He kept bees and also owned a beautiful green parrot that liked taking lumps out of your ear. Would the Society be able to throw any light on this author? Ultimately I would like to get a copy of this book but I fear it might be akin to obtaining 'Fly Fishing' by J.R.Hartley. I treasure the memories of the not very long time I spent in Derbyshire the local people were so kind to us evacuees. In grateful thanks to them I became a Derby County supporter at the cup final in 1946(?) and have supported them ever since. Hard work at times. The Hall family were basically a mining family, father and son, another son was in the R.A.F., and third son Ken worked in a hosiery factory. My memories are sketchy but I can remember the two slag heaps across the main road and the little spoil cars on their perpetual journey up and down the slopes. Well that's my small blast from the past, if you can throw any light on that author I would be very much obliged." |
