Heanor Empire
replied on: 3/31/2005 2:40:51 PM In the 30s my fayther won 10 bob (50p) in a yo-yo competition held at the Empire. My favourite was the Sunday night x-rated film showing. The film was the scary type not the how much flesh can the producer get away with not covering sort. A gang of us used to occupy the row of 5 or 7 seats towards the back. We used to laugh at the scary bits and usually had the usherettes torch winging our way with a if you dont behave out you go. The Bernie Bumpkin site mentioned earlier in this thread is well worth looking at for the local history content. The threepney rush was the best of all, film break, 600 children stamping their feet and shouting we want picture. The poor manager stood in front of the screen trying to get a bit of order. Just before the start of the serial the cleaner coming along and shouting Dont make any rivers in the toilet while the serial is on. If you stood well back you could see the screen but had no chance of getting anywhere near the intended target area. regards Phil |
