Jimmy Wilson and the Pond
replied on: 4/10/2005 4:04:34 PM

Jimmy used to live in the house next to the run of shops on Roper Avenue. Jimmy was killed in the slurry that came down from the dirt hill for Coppice Colliery. At the end of Osbornes Pond there were two streams that fed in to the pond. The land between the two was always called the island. I cannot remember exactly why Jimmy went over the slurry. This always looked quite solid but I never went too close to it. This happened in the mid to late 50s.
Jimmy's mam never really came to terms with Jimmys death. She would often go in to the shop to get a bit of ham for Jimmy. She would get it in to her head that he was coming home that afternoon.

regards Phil
