Mapperley's Original Name + Explanation.
replied on: 4/22/2005 3:39:42 PM The first planting of the Maple tree was in November 1972 or 3 and the Canadian chap was something to do with Laura Secord Chocolates.Other guests of honour were John Wain (not the cowboy!!!!)who was a former Heanor Grammar School pupil and at that time I think was a teacher in Heanor and his wife Rosalyn (who was the daughter of Mr Stone ,headmaster of H.G.S.) Mrs Lowe was the school headmistress at that time and photographs of the ceremony were in the local paper. The day was called Arbour Day and was celebrated up until a couple of years ago-but enquiries are being made into why the tradition came to a halt. |
