Stainsby House - 20th Century
replied on: 7/11/2005 7:42:31 AM

Stainsby House was in the hands of the Wilmot-Sitwells until at least the first world war.

Between the wars, the family left the Smalley estate, which was split up. The main house was sold to a poultry farmer.

Around the time of the second world war, the hall was acquired by the Brothers of Mercy, which ran "St. Aloysius College," a boarding school for boys in Highgate, London. The school was evacuated to Smalley soon after the outbreak of the war, and remained for the duration.

After the war, Stainsby House reverted to poultry farming, and its condition deteriorated.

Demolition of the house took place in 1972 - from then on read the topic on the new Stainsby House.
