Does anyone have any history on Shanakiel, Ikkeston Rd? I know for many years it was used by Heanor Council as their main offices.
I remember going there in the 1950's to the council rate office being very impressed with the entrance-a large wide hall way, dark wood pannelling, a large old fireplace and the the sweeping staircase. I worked there in the 1960's for a while, and while the entrance hall was the same, there had new extensions added -totally out of keeping with the old building.
My Grandfather, as a young man, used to go there to entertain with the choir (probably 1920's -or earlier) he was part of -and he too was impressed by the grandeur of the place-but i don't recall who he used to entertain?
Was it ever a family home or was it always a local building?
I think a private company now occupy the building.
