Milkmen
replied on: 10/1/2005 6:08:05 PM

In the early 30s there were other milkmen besides the Coop. In our area there were three I remember each equipped with horse and cart.
Mr Lucas from his farm next to the Laundry.
Barnes just across the road from there and Mr Hart who lived up Rays Avenue.
They usually had a large churn on board to replenish two smaller tanks about 3 gallons each. These had two ladles hanging inside for pint and half pint. People came out with their jugs or left them on the window sill with a saucer on top. Milk had to be boiled in those days in the summer to stop it going sour. There were very often two deliveries per day.
There's a tale about a Langley Mill milkman. He used to get off his cart at the bottom of Cromford Rd and deliver round there then up Bridge St, and over the bridge onto North St. Meanwhile the horse would carry on and be waiting for him opposite the Church.
