I started Aristoc straight from school at 14 in 1944, as a knitters lad. I left in 1949 to do national service. When I came back there were so many men had been demobbed that there was no room for any of my age group. My father worked there during the war when he had to come out of the pit. He was in the damp houses where the yarn was kept to keep it at the correct humidity. He was also in the factory fire brigade and they had to go on nights firewatching.
I remember a Sid Newman there but he was a knitter.
