Shops /Businesses in Eastwood
replied on: 4/30/2006 10:15:48 PM Clifford Motories from "A century remembered 2000" "Clifford Motories was founded in 1907 at 29 Nottingham Rd on the corner of Victoria St opposite the bank. The shop was opened by my grandfather Arthur Clifford who was married to Suannah Carlin. They had 9 children, 3 boys and 6 girls. In the early days the shop sold bicycles, records and gramaphones and later motorcycles , accumulators and batteries. Arthur was one of the first men in Eastwood to own and drive a car. During WW2 the engineering side of the business was commissioned by Rolls Royce to make parts for aeroplanes, turning out work which was 1A quality, the highest standard possible. Arthur died in 1956 but nt before he had bought bigger premises at Essex St behind 164 Nottingham Road, at the other end of Eatwood. Arthur's 3 sons -Wilfred, Bernard and William-continued to run Clifford Motories, selling and servicing motorcycles and cars until Dec 1892 when Bernard died and the business was sold. Wilfred died in 1994 and the remaining members of Arthur's family are William, Mabel and Joan." Contributed by Fay Hickingbotham (nee Clifford) My father bought his first brand new Tiger Cub motorcycle from Cliffords in late 1930's Martins Furniture store now occupy the premises on Essex St (mentioned on Hotel or Pub Topic by Iceboy) |
