Midland General
replied on: 9/13/2006 7:48:06 AM ![]() The newspaper picture, dated 15/5/59, courtesy of Jenny. "Part of a road subsided in Loscoe last Friday as a double decker bus passed over it. The bus then ran out of control through a garden and crashed into a house on Sheldon Road. All 12 passengers on the bus escaped serious injury. The driver, Mr. G. W. Hardy of Mansfield Road Heanor, said, 'I was going along the road at a normal speed when the road suddenly seemed to cave in. I was thrown to the floor of the cab and I felt the bus speed up and go sharply left. Just as I was trying to get off the floor and regain control the bus crashed into the house.' Three of the passengers on the bus received superficial cuts but the others weere unhurt. One commented, 'It was a terrifying experience. The bus suddenly jolted and swerved, and before we knew what was happening, we were going through the gardens.' Two rooms of the house were severely damaged and a corner of the building was reduced to rubble. Its occupants, Mr. & Mrs. W. H. Grainger were both out at the time. The bus, which belongs to the Midland General Omnibus Co., was traveling along High Street towards Heanor." I wonder if the house is still standing? |
