THE BUTCHERS ARMS -Hands Road
replied on: 11/16/2006 10:19:48 AM Welcome to the site Gemma, good to have you on board. Robert, I always expect cellar steps to be old worn stone, but the ones at the Butchers must have been fairly easily removable at one time!!!!! R&H 15 Jan 1918 "A most singular accident ocurred at the Butchers Arms, Langley, last Friday afternoon, when a horse was accidentally precipitated into the cellar at the rear of the premises. Some barrels of ale were being lowered into the cellar, when one got jammed, and to release it one of the horses was attached by chains. Instead of pulling, the horse backed and before the men in charge could save the animal it fell into the cellar. Fortunately it took kindly to its new quarters and remained perfectly quiet, until the following day, when in order to rescue the animal the steps had to be removed, and a slanting path made up the yard, by which the imprisoned horse was able to walk out, no worse for its adventure." |
