Heanor St. Lawrence - Empty Tomb, etc
replied on: 11/19/2006 8:33:36 PM

Sorry about the delay in responce, had a bit of a silly shift at work and the church hall was in use on Saturday so today was the first day that I've had the chance to check out my theory.

When the Church was demolished and rebuilt I believe the remaining grave markers had to be taken down for the cranes etc to be able to take down roof timbers etc. Most of this was unavoidable due to the subsidence meaning that Sissons literally described the Church being held together by the iron ties, a large proportion of the church had to be demolished carefully to avoid most of it ending up in the road in one fell swoop.

Due to the landscaping that took place after this the majority of the stones remaining were either ones that were already in poor condition due to the stones used and so incorporated into the landscaping or if in good condition (mostly the slate ones due to their hardwearing nature) were either put at the edge of the new landscaped area or were incorporated elsewere in the building.

Robert's grave is still intact and one of the ones used as part of the new building.

From the main entrance of the Church (at the tower) go right along the south (road) side of the outside of the Church, when you get to the East end of the Church you will see what is left of the old East end "left to create the illusion of a ruinous form to a pleasing effect" (God help us for what was considered "pleasing effect" in the 70-80's) Follow the weelchair ramp and you will see a small iron gate that lets you into the area between the old and new East wall. From the gate move to your right so that you are against the old East wall, Robert's gave is now the 2nd grave up in front of you on the ground.

Please excuse the mess, amoungst the other vandelism we have suffered they have knocked a lot of the plaster off the wall and ripped up some plants - plans are ahead to clean up and repair / plant in the warmer months.

Most of the graves there are the ones that were in the best conditions, had good carving or were important historically (i.e. Howetts and Wooleys).

I'm hoping that once we have the archives online and start cross referancing church records with the census' etc to put photographs of the graves linked to the people in the archives.. but thats a big project still WAY in the future... especially as Matlock are dragging their heels about giving me some of the information I've requested.

Hmmm... think this might be the longest of my posts. Hope it helps
