Churchwardens, Bells & Bell-ringers
replied on: 12/29/2006 10:48:34 AM As mentioned in the Heanor town clock section we hope to launch the St Lawrence website soon. With the information on the site will be sections dedicated (seperatly) to the church bells, the bell ringers and the churchwardens. At present we would like to see if we can find some information and photos about each of these subjects - we have the basic information but we would like more. For the bells, we have information about them historicaly but we are trying to find more information about the 1902 changes when the the old wood bell frame was taken out and a new one installed increasing the peal from 6 to 8 - do we know if any early photographers documented the event? - I know some towns used such events to make postcards of the bells. For the bell-ringers ANY information would be appreciated. We will be in contact with the current tower captain shortly for any information he has, but we would like to find out if any photos exist of earlier generations of ringers (hand and change - the church had both at one point), or any family tales about family members who were ringers - for example Thomas Gillot who died Dec 4th 1757 in the ringing loft having just rung the call to service. Churchwardens is a longer term project as it is going to take quite a bit of research to restore the data. We have the churchwardens from 1584-1743, and we hope to reconstruct some of the information from the Litchfield, Southwell and Derby Dioceses but cannot be sure how much they can provide. We would like any information people come across about the churchwardens; family members who were churchwardens, a family diary that meantions a churchwarden, a newsaper article that meantion a churchwardens name, an old parish magazine that has the churchwardens as contacts - basically anything! If you know a family member was a churchwarden but you are not sure of the date (or better, if you know the date) we would also appreciate the name (and if possible a copy / scan of the photograph of them) if no date is known we will store the data and add it once we know the year. RMMee - I am not sure if I can make it to the next meeting as my shift is uncertain at present (was very annoyed when they changed my shift so that I wasn't able to get to the Ilkeston dig one!) would you be able to have an announcment made in the notices section of the meeting for a request of the above information from members who dont go online? - thanks |
