Tram and Trolley bus
replied on: 5/17/2007 2:06:07 PM My dad used to be a bus conductor with Midland General, for a few years in the late 1950's. I presume the term must have come form something like "conductor man" as one of the conductor's jobs during the trolley-bus era would be to re-attach the pole to the overhead cable if it ever got dislodged. In my youth visiting Derby I can still remember the trolley busses. The pole to attach the cable rider was a long bamboo that fitted into a tube that ran the length of the bus on the pavement side, with access to it from the platform. |
