Aldercar lane (which you drove down) was home to Aldercar Hall -if you go to the Langley Mill and Aldercar forum you may be interested to read the "Aldercar Toll Gate" and "Aldercar Hall" topics.
However,I doubt your relatives would have lived there. Part of what we now know as Cromford Road, or possibly part of Dunstead Rd (Robert will correct me as to which part was known as Aldercar lane) was at that time also called Aldercar lane -some of my ancestors lived there too-in terraced cottages.
I would think your ancestors worked at the flour mill -on which there is a topic on the langley mill and Aldercar forum.
The Smith family, before acquiring the flour mill were cola mine owners in Langley mill/Aldercar.
Hope this helps
