Man in Space Pub"
replied on: 8/7/2007 2:14:09 PM In the film "Carry on at your Convenience", there is a works outing from "Boggs" sanitary ware works to Brighton. On the way, certain amounts of ale are taken and to illlustrate this, a montage of pub signs are shown, ostensibly of the pubs visited. One of these is the Red Lion in Iver, Bucks, near to Pinewood Studios where the films were made, not far from where I now live. Another one was the "Man in Space" pub at Hill Top, with "Kimberley Ale" shown on the sigh. The sign shown was the original one with an austronaut floating in space with a coiled umbilical cord, which has I think now changed. How this came to be on the road from London to Brighton escapes me. I think the Carry on Films were made to a low budget, so any bit of old stock footage was pressed into service. And so Eastwood passed into the annuls of Film History. I think the pub was so named as it was reopened shortly after one of the first USSR space walks. |
