Churchwardens, Bells & Bell-ringers
replied on: 10/20/2007 7:08:55 AM

1902 H/O 12th Dec, The Parish Church Bells. On the secret of success, Danton say’s “In order to conquer what we need is to dare, still to dare and always to dare.” Surely this spirit has been manifested with regard to the scheme for securing a peal of eight bells for Heanor. The interest of the general public has been secured through the influence of Mr. J. Andrews, J. P., chairman of the council, who has taken the initiative in the scheme and done so much for its unexpected success. The original intention was to raise £200 but so daring have the collectors been that over £5000 has been willingly subscribed, and the whole of the expenditure involved will be met. The clergy and church wardens Holbrook and Mayfield have been backed up by an energetic committee, Mr H. J. Windle has been a tower of strength as secretary. Amongst the collectors Mr. Joseph Briggs has been almost ubiquitous he has been well assisted by Mr. C. Marshall, Supt Daybell has been full of enthusiasm, and together with his colleague Dr. Roe, has netted a substantial sum. The other collector, all of whom have done exceedingly well, are Messrs Abel Toplis, Jas Walker, Wm Voss, Albert Briggs, H. W. Gregory, C. H. Robinson, J. Hodges, A. H. Graham, G. Godber and D. W. Clarke. The arrival of the Bells on Friday created some what of a stir photographs of the bells together with the clergy wardens and secretary, were taken by Mr. A.
