replied on: 1/14/2008 10:12:37 PM Robert, 3 people I have spoken to remember Mary Payne (one of them my hubby! one of them was a friend of hers) Her full name was Ruth Mary Payne but she went by the name of Mary. Her brother Max was a pupil at the school and he occassionally attends the Old Student Reunions. Mary Payne lived at Penybryn Heanor Rd Smalley and had come home from school for lunch -ran across the road to catch the bus back to school and was fatally injured in a collision with a coal lorry. She had been a pupil at HGS for just over a year and was a member of the HGS Girl Guides. She was to have sung carols with the Guides around the Christmas tree in Heanor market place -which of course never came to fruition. She was age 12 when she died and her funeral report was in the Ripley and heanor 30th Dec 1955 "A little blonde girl" is how she was described to me . I assume the trophy was donated by her family. |
