E. Bamber. He was in his 88th year. In former years Mr Shaw was a well-known figure in local musical circles, and his outstanding ability as a violinist endeared him to audiences for many miles around His efforts in connection with the concerts given by the former Heanor Choral Union were continued for many years, and the success of the concerts was in no small measure due to his meticulous execution of the exacting orchestral parts involved. As a theatre player he led the orchestra at Heanor Empire for 23 years until the coming of “Talkies” caused it to be disbanded. A further facet of his career was as leader of the augmented orchestra, which accompanied the Savoy Opera production of the late Heanor Amateur Operatic Society in which capacity he gave pleasure to many hundreds of listeners, and earned high praise from the professional musicians who produced the operas. Mr Shaw was a popular soloist and performed at many important social functions over a large area. His wide and varied activities also included orchestral work at seaside resorts and theatres, whilst no church or chapel anniversary was complete without his presence. Many former pupils will remember his prowess as a teacher, which brought out the best to those of high musical ability, whilst allowing those of lesser gifts to taste some degree of pleasure, which they might never have otherwise attained. Yet a further aspect of his work was his part in a string Quartette, which gave classical recitals for some years. The interment took place on Monday, at Marlpool Cemetery, the service in the Chapel and the last rites at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. Philip du Feu Minister of Heanor Wesley Church. daughter's married name Bamber? |
