replied on: 4/23/2008 3:41:17 PM 1916 PTE WILLIAM HENRY WHITNEY 21ST JANUARY 1916 RIPLEY & HEANOR NEWS TWO HEANOR SOLDIERS KILLED IN ACTION Mrs. Whitney residing at 45, Park Street, Heanor, has just received the following letter dated January 9th from Lce. Sergt G. Hunt, Signal Section: “ I am very sorry to write this letter to inform you of the death of your son William, who was killed this morning while doing his duty. I think you will forgive me taking the liberty of writing to you on behalf of his comrades. He was out looking for a broken line and must have exposed himself to the enemy. We know it must be hard for you, and he was so young. He was very well liked by all the Signal Section, who will miss him very much. The sergeant for whom I am writing this was out with him, and he also had a narrow escape.” Whitney was only 18 years of age. |
