We always just knew it as Maurice's.One way to find out would be to find the house number of the shop and then look through electoral roll for a year when he lived there(and was over 21!)

There is still a chippy on Peel St in the same place as "Maurices"
I remember Maurice's well-it was a grocery shop with a chip frying range behind the grocery counter. Evenings and Fri/Sat lunchtimes were his "frying" times. People would take their dishes, plates etc wrapped in a teatowel to have them filled. If you didn't fancty fish or meat pie, Maurice would cut you a slice of home cooked ham to have with your chips. He had a very good reputation around the area. Maurice, if I recall correctly, was a stocky dark haired man, not too tall-he was always working-I seem to recall he had a bad leg, but that could just have been the way he walked as he carried in heavy buckets full of potatoes-chipped and ready to fry. Everything he sold was "top quality"

Hi

All I remember is Mr Morris' chip shop on Peel Street - great fish, chips and mushy peas and not forgetting the fritters.

Mr Morris used to sell many items, bread, chocolate, fruit, milk, you name it, he sold it.

Just reading through this thread, I'm actually looking to find some information on Morris Whysall/Wiseall, possible married to Phyllis ... all I know for sure is that he ran the chippy on the corner of Peel Street.

I can see that someone remembers a Morris being there ... does anyone remember anything else about him? I'm hoping that this is the same Morris.

thanks

I expect they enjoyed a long overdue retirement. Did the chip shop become a freezer centr after the chippy closed?

The Chinese restaurant just down from Louie's milk Bar was, as far as I can recall, open for a number of years-I think it is now a Chinese takeaway! We remember going there a few times-it was quite a novelty to have a Chinese in Heanor-before that we would have to travel to Nottingham or Derby for a taste of the Orient,
I remember the couple who ran it had a very young family-and on one occasion their little boy came to eat with us.
Very pleasant family-nothing was too much trouble for them.

Alan

The Alma was the name given to a row of houses at the end of Abbott Street, by the juntion with Derby Road. The houses were set on top of a ridge.

This message refers to a chip shop in Derby Road "near to the old Almas entrance". Can you tell me what is the old Alma? My great grandparents address in 1893 was "Alma Heanor" and I am wondering where/what this is?

No, sorry I don't know how long it was there but I would agree it was short-lived. I certainly only remember the one visit
