replied on: 3/4/2007 7:38:55 AM 1888 Ripley Advertiser Heanor The new market on Wednesday the work in connection with the new market place was commenced in earnest. A number of trees which stand on the ground were cut down. The occasion was of great interest to the parishioners, and considerable excitement was manifest. As a token of remembrance of the first tree being felled the church bells rang out a merry peal. The work is to be carried on as quickly as possible. In 1887 one of the plans was to build the market place on Taghill “no 1 Market scheme” which included purchase of the Cross Keys for £1600, but then they received the letter from E. M. Mundy, Esq, of Shipley Hall, April 3 1888. Jenny |

replied on: 3/3/2007 9:05:24 AM Ripley Advertiser 1888 A MARKET PLACE FOR HEANOR Generous Gift by Mr. E. M. Mundy Although several plans and schemes have been freely discussed and a large number of meetings have been held on the subject, very little progress has been made, partly on account of the monetary difficulty, but chiefly owing to the great diversity of opinion which existed as to where the market should be situated, It appears, however the difficulty has been solved, as Mr. E. M. Mundy, J.P. Shipley Hall, has come to the front and made a generous offer to the parishioners of Heanor. He is willing to give a piece of ground, upwards of three thousand yards in area, from what is known as the Laws, abutting on to the old Market place, opening out nearly opposite the church, and extending nearly to Ray Street. The only stipulations are that the said land shall be used solely as a market, and for no other purpose, that it shall be under the control of the local authorities, and that the sum of £200 be raised by subscription to defray the cost of pulling down and removing the high wall which runs the whole length of the plot, making a new footpath, &c. The offer has met with the most favourable reception, and upwards of £150 has been already promised towards the required sum. In some places the wall will be put back 30 yards. This added to the large open space there is at the present times, will form one of the most commodious market places in the county of Derby. Among the subscribers is Mr. T. Hardy, of Kimberley, who gives £100. The work of removing the wall and preparing the ground will begin in the course of a few days. Jenny |

replied on: 2/21/2006 3:11:57 PM Yes I remember the Fish shop as a kid. What happened to Birks Dress shop just across from Freddie Crooks Flog shop? And just as a matter of interest - the huge door, still on the Westminster Bank was built by my father. Any stories about the early Cosy. My grandfather used to play the violin in a combo for the silent movies there. |

replied on: 12/3/2005 5:00:04 PM Ripley & Heanor News Oct 27 1898-accompanied by a very good photograph OPENING OF NEW BANK PREMISES IN HEANOR "On Monday next, the 30th instance, there will be opened for the transaction of business a handsome and imposing structure which Messrs Crompton and Evans Ltd, the well known firm of bankers, have just erected. This firm, who have their head offices at Irongate, Derby, and numerous branches throughout the county, opened the Heanor Branch some two years ago,and with the rapid extension of business, the limited accomodation of the old premises in the Market Place has for some considersble time been taxed to its utmost. The company therefore decided to erect a new bank, and it may be safely said that the premises to be opened on Monday are not only replete with every accomodation likely to be required, but they also constitute one of the most handsome architectural features of the town. The new bank is situated at the top of market Street,a short distance from their temporary premises next to the Town Hall, which will now be vacated, and adjoins the site on which stands the Weslyan Chapel, facing the northern end of Ray Street. The whole block has a most imposing appearance, which at once suggests the nature of the business for which it has been erected, and being very substantiously built, is in strict accord with the reputation of this old established banking firm. The facade in Market Street is of pressed bricks, with massive cornices, and dressings of the celebrated Darley Dale Stone, as are also the two other elevations. The principal banking apartment (access to which is out of the entrance hall in front) is rectangular in form, and has a superficial area of440 feet, and is handsomely furnished throughout with mahogany fittings of elaborate design. Leading from this apartment, a short corridor is crossed to the manager's room, into which opens the strong room, fitted with one of Messrs Chubbs damp, fire and burglar proof doors and fittings. The interior, which is specially ventilated, is fitted with safes by the same renowned makers, the whole forming an impregnable barrier to the would be spoiler, fire and burglar alike. The remaining suite of rooms are devoted to the manager's domestic use, and are tastefully and elegantly fitted and finished. The whole of the rooms, business and private, are spacious and well lighted,in fact, nothing has been omitted that would add to the convenience provided for the public in the transition of business, and which will no doubt be greatly appreciated by the banking community in Heanor and District. The architect is Mr Samuel Richards, 3 market Place Ilkeston and the contractor is Mr George Oldershaw, Marlpool. |
