replied on: 4/20/2004 3:29:58 PM I remember your father he was the Pit bottom deputy and as young 15 year olds our first jobs were to keep the coal tubs moving on a continuous rope haulage from the pit bottom up to the loader and then back into the pit bottom to be loaded to go up the shaft.Two Bestwicks i recall working there where Trevor and Matt where they your brothers. The pit head baths came around 1958 and the pit had all of its road supports removed within 6 months of it closing in the 1960s.All the miners having been transferred to Ormonde Colliery to work the same coalfaces from a roadway reached via the Ormonde shafts |
