I'll reserve judgement till I see it - as long as they don't destroy the old by bringing in the new. A marina might be nice, but it will only work if it fits in with the surroundings - it would be good if at the same time there was a substantial investment in the work to re-open the Cromford Canal - the two would fit very well together.

Access 26, from what I've seen so far, I have a lot of doubts about - don't we have enough industrial/commercial parks in the area already? At least it's on a brown field site.

Anything that will improve the area for the people who live there is going to be worth it though.

It may be pleasant news to people on here that there's apparently a lot of money going to be poured into the Langley Mill area over the next couple of years. There's meant to be some sort of marina being built around the canal, and Access 26 developed too.

It might be classed as private property, but there is a public footpath that goes right alongside the castle, and the road is also a general right of way, certainly on foot.

I'll leave the question of the Stoneyford Boat to you - everyone has their own tastes - I enjoyed their lunchtime carvery when I last went, but that was a couple of years ago.

Hmmm - I seem to remember walking down there when we were looking at buying our house. Is it not marked as private property?

Also, is the Stoneyford Lodge a reasonable place?

You go straight on rather than turning right to the Stoneyford Boat (or Stoneyford Lodge nowadays), and its a few hundred yards further on on your right.

It's not that impressive, but it's "real history."

Details (and a photo) are on the website. It's really quite a pleasant stroll in the summer - there is an Amber Valley leaflet showing a walk that would bring you back via the route of the Cromford Canal into Langley Mill.

Hi, thanks for the reply

The Barratts site is about 100m along Upper Dunstead Road on the left hand side as you're walking away from the church. We moved in on the last bank holiday weekend.

I had a brief look at the HeanorHistory website the other day but was quite busy at the time so will have another peek later on today.

The Norman castle thing is fascinating. My girlfriend and I walked down Aldercar Lane the other evening - went past Aldercar Hall and Park Farm but turned back just before the fork where the right turn goes to the pub. Is the castle past the pub, or do we turn left at the fork?

Tim

Welcome to the Forum, and thanks for your comments. I'm not sure exactly where the Barratt site is (I shall check next time I'm in Langley Mill), but it's doubtless on the site of an old outcrop and/or brickworks.

When it comes to history, I take it you've seen our main site, at HeanorHistory.org.uk? Other than that, you won't find an awful lot on the web to do with the area. The Heanor & District Local History Society have published a few booklets over the years on the local history, some of which specifically include Aldercar - details are also on the website.

I'm Aldercar born and bred (though I don't live there now) - yes, it is a bit run down, but there's so much to its heritage and history - mostly, but not only, industrial. I don't know how long you've been in the area, but did you know that you are within walking distance of the remains of a Norman Castle? (Just go down Aldercar Lane for about 2 miles)

There will be a talk on the history of Langley Mill at the Society, but not till 8 March 2005 - well worth putting in your diary (non-members always welcome - just buy a raffle ticket!)

All the best for the future, and I hope you enjoy looking into the past too. Any queries, please get in touch.

Hi,

My girlfriend and I have recently moved into one of the new houses on the Barratt development just off Upper Dunstead Road. I'd be interested to hear about the history of Aldercar... Is there any info online that I can read up on?

It's clearly an old mining area - there's usually some interesting facts when mining's concerned!

Thanks,
Tim.
