Hi, Oppem.

In the old days, horses were used to pull the wagons Etc. up the steep West/Tagg/Hill/Derby Rd;

If there was a particularly heavy load, or the going was rough and heavy for some reason, like detrimental weather conditions, then another horse (or two) would be connected to the existing team - or TAGGED on, hence - Tagg Hill.

Having now seen it on a 1955 map (courtesy of Peter Chamberlain), it's further out of town that I thought it was. (Perhaps it should be in the Smalley discussion group!). Although there aren't lots of streets around it, I think the explanation for why it stopped being named thus still applies - it now just forms part of the ribbon development from Heanor to Smalley, and needs no separate name.

I don't know when, but I assume that it was because all the various little groups of houses gradually got subsumed into the larger town of Heanor, and at the same time streets started to be given names. (I can't remember when it was, but some time mid 19th century, I have read that the only street name in Heanor was Mount Street, yet there are undoubtedly a lot of streets which are older than that date.)

Out of interest, what street is the substation on - "Housley Town" isn't actually named on any maps that I have seen (I've only seen Tagg Hill) - I know it's over at Heanor Gate way, I think on the main road, but I've never been 100% sure.

I was wondering if anyone new why and when Housley Town was dropped from the addresses as it is still on the electicity substation sign at the end of the row of houses we live in? Also an elderly Gent who is coming to tune our piano siad his Sister used to live near the shop in Housley Town.

Thanks so much for your information re: 'fishponds'. I had always wondered.
I hope that one day you find the time to write about all the 'unusual names' found in the Heanor area - Tag Hill is another one that I have often wondered about...

The area was named Fishponds because there were, in the 18th century, 4 (manmade?) fishponds in the vicinity, that were later filled in.

You're spot on as to their location, as they were situated between Loscoe Road and what is now Douglas Avenue. The ponds were certainly there in 1792, and were possibly filled in, to be used for housing, after the break up of the Heanor Hall Estate in the 1870's. Although I have seen a description of the four ponds, the old map I possess a copy of only shows three - I can't compare, because I haven't got a date for my map.

The ponds were fed by a stream which came from the high ground to the west of Heanor Gate, and then emptied into the Bailey Brook, via a dyke which ran through what is now Burns Street and Wood End.

Hope this is of some use.

There were quite a few areas which had unusual names in the Heanor district - such as Tag Hill, Peacock Town, Kings Town, Bogard Town, and Housley Town. I shall prepare a page on the main website on the subject when I get the time.

'Fishponds' and other local place names
replied on: 7/21/2004 12:14:42 PM

Many of my past relatives lived in Heanor and many of them lived in an area called 'Fishponds'.
I also remember my Grandmother talking about fishponds. Seem to think she told me it was somewhere near Holmes St. but not sure.
Does anyone know why it was called this and anything about this area - my relatives were mostly miners, so am guessing the area was probably a very poor one ??..
Thanks if anyone can help.
