Closure of Langley Mill Police Station
replied on: 10/30/2006 9:50:23 PM Just to add to the numbers confusion: Directly opposite the old Police station the block of 4 houses was originally nos 13a to d with what is now 47 being 13d. They were built in the 1920s I think and my dad says they were slipped in between the original numbers. Then by the 2nd WW they had changed to nos 25 a to d 25d being no 47 and by 1955 whenI was born the current numbering was in place but was probably recent. My Grandparents lived at no 47. |

replied on: 8/18/2006 9:05:16 AM Jenny, Almost certain that house numbers on Station Road have been changed, I remember the telephone exchange being in those house's. I have an address for Nellie Outram's Milliner's at No.80 Station Road in 1924 which was then almost opposite the entrance to which is now Netto's. The telephone exchange was in the houses to the right going towards Milnhay Road. If the numbers 142 - 144 are correct it suggests that they were numbered to the right, but Colin purchased No.146 which he says was to the left. Therefore it seems to indicate the houses have been re - numbered in the opposite direction. Paul.R |

replied on: 8/17/2006 2:29:35 PM Correction Ref. Old Telephone Exchange, Station Road, Langley Mill. I have the above address as 144 and 146 Station Road, Langley Mill. The one that I purchased was 146 the left hand dwelling of the two and I believe still numbered so. If this is so, then the newspaper report or details since seem to be incorrect? Sorry to confuse....Colin |

replied on: 8/15/2006 8:17:41 PM Thank You JENNYPEG for your item 14th Aug. and to Peter Chamberlain for bringing the issue to my attention. Ref. 142 and 144 Station Road. ex Telephone Exchange...This property was bought by Messrs. Wood Bros (Builders) Ltd. (My two brothers) and modernised (What a mis-used word) I was married in June 1958 and bought 144 Station Road for the sum of £750. (Mortgage of £500). We lived there for some years before moving to Milnhay Road. Of course we remember the property and conditions vividly as I used to leap down the stairs in the middle if the night to fill baby bottles at times. Ref. The Police Station during the 2nd World War...At this time we lived at the top of Howitt Street and my father was in the Special Constabulary. This required once a week attandance at the Police Station at Langley Mill. I have my fathers Special Constabulary Medal for this service during the War. I well remember the things that I overheard and ref. a Mr Frank Hurt of Langley who seemed to be quite a character. I would be 10 years old at this time but well remember the remarks. I hope that these comments are of interest to readers....Colin |

Closure of Langley Mill Police Station
replied on: 2/24/2006 8:47:06 PM Robert It was still operational in the 50's, I don't know whether Roger can remember him, but there used to be a bobby Smith used to patrol around Langley Mill, and he once caught me scrumping in a orchard at the back of Hallam's house in George Street when the top jitty was still open. A few kind words and a clout until I got home and Dad was waiting with another. PaulR P.S. Robert I wrote this before I saw your bit on Local Dialects |

replied on: 1/10/2006 9:22:59 AM Mr. John George Steeples 14th Jun 1929 R/H With much regret we have to announce the passing of Mr John George Steeples, retired policeman, of the Market Place, on Wednesday, at 68 years of age, after about six weeks painful suffering. Deceased served in the police force for 28 years. During that period he was stationed at Calow, Shirebrook, Duffield, and at Heanor for 23 years. Since his retirement he was caretaker of the recreation ground, but owing to feeble health had to resign. The funeral takes place at Heanor Cemetery to-morrow (Saturday). Deceased leaves a widow, six daughters, and four sons. Also in 1930 a retired policeman (Ling) aged 73 tried to kill him-self “being stationed for some time at Langley Mill” Jenny |
