Sukey's Hollow
replied on: 2/21/2006 2:45:43 PM

I too have fond memories of the sweet shop in the hut. My grandmother lived on Ella Bank and I used to get sweets after walking through Sukeys Hollow from Heanor. That path used to make the hair on the back of my neck stand up!

The house I'm trying to find out about stands at the top of Ella Bank. If you're coming up Ella Bank, its just on the left of the footpath which goes through to the rec and Marlpool Church.

Suky's Hollow is onthe opposite side of the road.

Hope this helps!

I'm afraid (showing my age!) that you've lost me. Where were these buildings in relation to present day streets, etc?

I remember the little wooden shop too, used to buy sherbert fountains there most Saturdays.

Does anyone remember the house across the road from the shop which used to be a club? Not sure what kind of club but I remember my mum telling me that her dad was the steward there at one time.

Maybe its the same place where you had piano lessons?

I used to visit the little wooden shop at the top of Sukey's hollow every Saturday after piano lessons at Mrs Platts across the road.

I believe that the man who ran it was some relation to the people who owned the bungelow behind while I was waiting for my sister to finish her lesson.

Thanks for the c.1896 Map input, Ice.

The empty ground space which was to become 'Shanakeil', awaits the then future arrival of our good Irish Doctor - Doctor Eames.

map kindly donated by azza.

looking at the picture,it seems there is no ella bank,as sukeys hollow continues nearly up to mill bank and mill road. the traingle between mill rd and mill bank depicts that windmill must have been sighted there.but the jitty from east street and mill rd does lead onto a road.would this be the begining of ella bank.

I've still got to crop it first, Ice. The whole page is too large. When i've done it and scanned it, i'll send you the weight numbers.

that's very interesting azza, because it mentions going past the mill, meaning the windmill in marlpool.the pond he also mentions, would this be the one in the park at the bottom of the heanor hospital grounds.so has anyone got a map of this route by any chance.

Sukey's Hollow

This is an eye-witness account of the Hollow of c.1910, 95 years ago, as given by Mr. Philip Eggleshaw in the very first edition of the Society's new Newsletter of January, 1970.

<><><>

It was always called Sukey's Hole and it started at Sye Lane by the side of the old stone-built Church Institute, now demolished.
It was a gated road, leading to two fields and to a cottage with another wheeled access to these properties.

The first gate was at the entrance from Sye Lane and the second at the end of a walled garden belonging to Ray Cottage, both gates had slip styles; the path then carried on past the Rectory wall which was built of furnace clinker. I think this showed the connection between the Church and the Butterley Company, for Canon Corfield's brother was Mining Agent to the company.

There was a small gate in this wall leading to the Rectory and just beyond that was the cottage which was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Parkin, who were the grandparents of the Bryan Family, some of whom still live in Heanor.
There was a third gate against the cottage with a clapper gate at the side. In the hedge belonging to this cottage, was a stone post about eighteen inches high inscribed on the side 'EMM' and opposite 'B.Co'.
The path then went steeply downhill and reached its lowest point at Sukey's Hole Pond, where there was a climb stile and a bridge. It then carried on up hill past the allotments on the right and passing the Old Mill House on the left, before terminating on Mill Road at Marlpool.

Past alternative names for the Sukey's Hollow pond, were - Sukey's Hole Pond and Pond Well*. Ah yes, shades of 'Sic'*, again.

I wonder why the pond at the bottom of the Hollow, wasn't called Sic, like its Marlpool counterpart? - Sukey's Sic. But then again, perhaps not................
It appears they must only name them after various trees.
