replied on: 1/31/2006 12:03:28 AM I was 8 at the time of the Carlisle (memory bank failure, hope I got the spelling correct) match. The rec next to the ground was used as a car park. It was ram jam packed full and had one or two of Inspector Metcalfe's finest patrolling the parked cars. regards Phil |

replied on: 1/28/2006 8:58:37 PM 4th Nov 1932 The Gazette "This land is the same as me. It was measured for a suit of clothes four years ago and has never had one" So said Coun Baker referring to the desolate state of the piece of land adjoining the football ground. He said he thought it was about time the Recreation Commitee took over the land. Coun Quantrill" May I put Coun Baker at rest? (Laughter) The recreation Committee will make that land a credit to the town. Plans are in hand." Wonder if this was an extension to the Town Ground or a new "rec" ? |

replied on: 12/3/2005 12:56:56 PM Sue I think the answer is yes (in relation to the Town Ground having stayed in the same location), but I am not sure that I can put my hand on anything to definitely confirm that. The article was, of course, before the days of legalised betting offices. It is only fairly recently though that bookies have been able to offer odds on football matches and the like. |

replied on: 12/3/2005 7:49:47 AM Ripley and heanor news July 21st 1898 On Wednesday evening the fortnightly meeting of Heanor Local Board was held in the Board room at the Public Offices. A lengthy discussion took place on the subject of betting at the sports held on Saturday. Mr Towson remarked that they had at Heanor a very good club, and excellent teams in both cricket and football, but the betting at the sports was a complete nuisance, and it was time a stop was put to it. He had named it to the committee, but they only stated they could not prevent it. He felt certain it could be stopped and it was their duty to make the effort. Several gentlemen of influence had spoken to him about it and they were surprised that members of the board should countenance such proceedings. He (Mr Towson) had always been a supporter of cricket and football, but he would never uphold such a disgraceful piece of gambling as was witnessed last Saturday. It was doing a great injury to the morals of young people. Mr John Goddard also condemned the sports as an evil unless they could be kept from such contamination. Mr Holbrook remarked that himself along with Mr John Fletcher were the leasees of the Heanor Town Ground and they held it for mr Mundy. He said they had tried to prevent gambling and had employed policemen to put it down and if they could not put the law in force he did not know how the committee could be held responsible. He considered sport ought to be so conducted that they could take their families and enjoy themselves. This however was an impossibility owing to the presence of the betting fraternity^ Seems like Heanor had its own "Football Pools"!!! So Mr Mundy owned the Town Ground-which has been in existence for over a hundred years-but was it always where it is now? |

replied on: 11/13/2005 9:57:08 PM Extract from The Heanor Observer, Thursday October 13, 1910 Death at a Football Match - The Late Mr. K. Earnshaw That "we know neither the day nor the hour" was brought home with full force to the spectators at the Heanor v Alfreton match at the Town Ground on, Saturday afternoon, when Mr Keyworth Earnshaw, Builder, of Fletcher Street, fell from his seat and died ere medical aid could be procured. Mr Earnshaw, Sat on a form near the pavillion during the major portion of the play when, about 15 minutes from the close he was observed to fall on to the ground. Sergt. Steeples, who was only a few feet away, and Mr. H. Lomax, ran to his aid, and a couple of seconds later they were joined by Inspector Stone. A messenger was dispatched for a doctor and the three rendered what aid they could. Their efforts were unavailing, however, and in a few minutes Mr. Earnshaw had breathed his last. Meantime, only a few spectators in the immediate vicinity were aware of the tragic occurrence, but on the arrival of Dr. Johnson a few minutes later, who pronounced life to be extinct, the referee was informed and the game was stopped. The body was later removed on a stretcher. Dr Eames afterwards granted a certificate that death was due to a fatty heart, and thus an inquest was not necessary. The late Mr Earnshaw, who was 57 years of age, was a native of Heanor, and was well known to everybody. His genial nature made him popular with everyone, and it has been, Said of him that " if he could not do a man a good turn he would not do him a bad one." He was truly large of heart as well as stature. Mr Earnshaw was a keen lover of sport, and though in latter years was unable to take an active part in games, he dearly loved to watch a game of football. He was a familiar figure on the Town Ground, and his genial presence will be missed by the regular attenders. Apart from sport Mr Earnshaw did not take much part in public life, though for 14 years he was a well known member of the Fire Brigade, holding the post of Vice-Captain. Two years ago, acting on medical advice he retired from membership, when he was made the recepient of a gold mounted walking stick. In making the presentation the Captain, Mr. John Holbrook,, Said that Mr Earnshaw had been connected with the Fire Brigade since its inception and his retirement was a matter of great regret to the firemen. Mr. Earnshaw had been present at every fire the Brigade had attended, and his way of dealing with fires had never been criticised. Mr. Earnshaw leaves a widow and nine daughters, for whom the greatest sympathy is felt in their sudden bereavement. The Funeral: Rain fell pitilessly yesterday during the time of the funeral, which was attended by the Fire Brigade, under Captain Holbrook. The coffin, covered with the flag of England (the St. George's Cross on a white background) was placed on the Fire Engine, which was drawn by three horses. The members of the Brigade marched on each side and preceding them were Messrs. I. Lockton, C Holmes, C Wheatley, J Kerry and S. Hollingworth, representing the King of Prussia Lodge of Oddfellows; Messrs. J.T. Turton (chairman) C.J. Stone (vice-chairman) and J. Beeby (secretary) of the Tradesmen's Association; Mr J Shaw and Mr E. A. Hardy, representing the Heanor United F.C. Mr R.W.Robinson, representing Messrs. I and R Morley's; Messrs. H.J. Windle, T. Jackson, F. Mayfield, J. Allen &c. The relatives followed in carriages, and were as follows:- Mrs Earnshaw, and Ethel, Bertha, Elizabeth, Harriett, Eliza, Nora, Nellie, and Pattie (daughters) Mr. J. Earnshaw, Mr. Brown, Mr. Judge, Mrs Baisley, Mr R Whysall; Mrs J Earnshaw, Mr F Whysall, Mr H Goddard, Mr and Mrs C.
