Hang around awhile, Jen. Some information might roll in as for the below.

Does anyone know when the old school/Academy, situated mid-way on the jitty/lane running from Ray St; to Broadway and lessons taken by Mr. Hodgson Grassby, was first designated as an Academy/school?

There is a photograph dated c.1894, but no further information.

The old Academy building still stands? a short way from the top of Mount St;

Hi, Jen.

Off hand, i don't have the Mount St; Chapel's history.

The Chapel itself was demolished decades ago. It's Site is now a ubiquitous car-park.

Hi Azzabuv,
No, no number just Mount Street. I have been reading the church section, and notice that there is a chapel on Mount Street. In view of the fact that he lived with 2 teachers, do you think that the chapel could have doubled as a school in 1861? I have no idea why he was a boarder, and not living at home?!

Hi, Jen.

RE Mount St; Heanor. Was there by any fluke of a chance, an address number, or any other information concerning which house the people above lived in?

Hi again Sue....I think that someone has tracked him down for me....I have had the following message in reply my posting on Ancestry :...

Hi Jen

I looked through the 1861 census for Heanor and found an area called Langley in the district of Heanor, which would tie in with some of your information.
I could find only one Henry West in Heanor but I'm not sure he's your man, as the birth date and place don't match.

Heanor, Mount Street Piece 2435 pg 103.
Lydia Rosere, head, um, 37, school teacher, York, Ecclisall.
Sarah A Rosere, sister, um, 34, post office assistant, York, Ecclisall.
Ann Rosere, niece, um, 31, school teacher, Derby.
Henry West, boarder, 10, scholar, Derby, Shipley.
Arthur West, boarder, 8, scholar, Derby, Shipley.
Henry Cartlidge, boarder, 6, scholar, Derby.
.......................................................................
This all adds up to it being my g.grandfather because his wife Fanny Harrop was born in Ecclesall Bierlow...so there is a link there-even though Ecclesall is spelt in two different ways. I still cannot find any record of their marriage...and any adea how Shipley came into the equation??!!?? I would assume that Arthur was his younger brother also! I would still appreciate any more information though Sue.

Cheers,
Jen x

Hi Jenny,
Henry wasn't born until 1848 so its possible that the 20yr old William was his father, and the 59yr old his grandfather..the 1851 census would confirm this.
Thanks for info.

Thanks Gill, via Robert.....My great grandfather Henry West was born in Langley Mill in 1848, and so would have been 21 yrs old at the time of the 1869 census....so could be the eldest child of this family of Wests, having already left home.......On the 1881 census Henry was married to Fanny Harrop and living in Mossley, with the first 3 of his 6 children...the 5th of which was my grandfather Herbert born in 1884 (born in Mossley). What I could do with is an earlier census than 1869 which would then put Henry still living at home....can anyone help?

May be of interest:1881 census RG11 3324 16
shows WILLIAM WEST 60 b.Sheapshead(should be Shepshed!), Leicester Framework Knitter
CATHERINE WEST wife 59 b Heanor
living at Loscoe Rd Heanor
It's not beyond the realms of possibility that WILLIAM is entered again at his daughters in Long Eaton-putting Heanor as birth place 'cos that is where he lived!
Also baptisms Heanor St Lawrence
all on 11/4/1852 MARY, MARTHA and JOHN WEST-Parents WILLIAM/CATHERINE-WILLIAM'S OCC fRAME WORK KNITTER
There are more WEST baptisms on the site-but not children of WILLIAM
