That's a good idea, Frs. Perhaps the walls were smooth inside once, to facilitate that procedure?
It certainly makes sense, especially if trees were there then. A nice cool spot to keep the joints of venison nice and fresh.

OR... as they say about Space, but in this instance meaning the Hall of hundreds of years ago - "No one can hear you Scream in here"? A kind of 'Grilling' situation?

Alternatively, perhaps a Guard-post, or where poachers were kept when caught, till their departure for the local jail?

Or simply a tool repository, for the grounds-men, or gardeners.
