Ulf's Shipley
replied on: 3/24/2005 8:33:57 PM I can't remember one anywhere round the top of the hill, but there was/is one where i picked for his homestead. In later years, as manpower numbers grew, it did become fashionable to defend a likely hilltop, but pre-(W)Ulf's days and in quite a lot of cases around his time period, people, especially in a forested area like Shipley was, tended to locate themselves in a secluded clearing, or dale away from a hilltop. In that way, any smoke from their fires was fairly well concealed and didn't give their position away as being on top of a hill would have done. But, as manpower numbers grew, might became right on any hilltop. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 3/24/2005 3:36:34 PM Just a quick one, for ease of defence it is traditional and tactically sound to have the higher ground. One gets rather tired having to run uphill whilst there are all many of nasty things coming from the hill top. Is there a spring/well in the area of the hill top ? regards Phil |

replied on: 3/24/2005 1:05:45 PM My own deduction would be that his Homestead was situated on the flattish ground behind the American Adventure Park. Someway past the bottom of the rough surfaced lane leading down from the Hall site today. Did Ulf change his name so as not to cause concern to his neighbours. Generally, such a name as Ulf would have had the letter W as its beginning - Wulf. But in Viking names, the name Wulf had its original Root meaning as being connected to the Devil and all manner of Left-Hand ways. So, on foggy Xmas nights - WHO is it really does ride his horse past Shipley Pond and and up the Hall lane. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 1/25/2005 11:41:56 AM Ulf's Shipley Homestead - 1000 A.D. (Ulf Fenisc - see Shipley History). Suggestions welcome for deducing where Ulf's original settlement was established. Would it have been very near to a water supply, such as the small stream which runs just inside the Southern boundary of John's Wood, leading to the Eastern edge of Mapperley Reservoir, or actually built on the then higher ground site of the ruined Shipley Hall. At that time, the whole area was well forested. Or could it have been on a similar site, somewhere on the Shipley area map above? Here's a chance, perhaps, to resolve a piece of unknown local history. All suggestions welcome. Azzabuv. |
