Cher

You are most welcome!

I hope you find something to stimulate further discussion. But if you don't, please don't hesitate to start new threads on anything that relates to your knowledge of the area.

Your g-g-father being a builder and grocer (strange combination!) - there must be something for a new thread there. Or perhaps a Fowkes thread in the family history section? Who knows where it may end!!!!!!

Regards

All I can find in the area is 1901 Thomas George Soldier market Place Riddings , another in Birchwood lane and one in High St Riddings.

I have found Thomas george 1881 aCoal Miner at Sportsmans Jessop St
and in 1901 he is keeping the Horse and groom Radford Rd Nottingham

Plenty of Georges in the erea, and lots of Thomas' but no Thomas George that I can find

All the George families seem to be coalminers or fwk/hosiery manufacturers... which was pretty much par for the course in Heanor

We never got a reply to this one.

Can anyone look up Thomas George in the 1891 and 1901 census, and see if he was a licensee in Codnor.

REFUSING TO QUIT
James Searson was charged with refusing to quit the Postman's Rest Codnor on 1st instance. Thomas George Landlord and PC Woolley proved the case-fined 5s and 3s 6d costs.

Hi I've just discovered my Shaw ancestors were from Loscoe and found your page with reference to a Shore being a publican in Loscoe area. Is there any way of tracing this back to an earlier generation to see if this Thoams Shore was connected to an Edward Shaw who was also a hotelkeeper I believe in Loscoe. I have no idea of hotel name as this information is from death cert in 1897 for Edward's son Thomas in Australia.

Don't know, but having had a few tipples in there myself, I would say it was the same age as the rest of the terraced houses on the street.

I do have a memory of the Sportsman, which is much more recent local history, but nonetheless of the same social importance.

In the late 1970's I went there with my wife-to-be, my brother and his girlfriend. Tony's girlfriend wanted a pint, which they totally refused to serve her. Not a lady's drink!

Things change!

What year was the 'Sportsman Inn' built?

The 1896 map still shows only one pub on Jessop St; - the one opposite the end of Wright St; with the other two on Mill Lane. No pub is marked as being near the main Rd; at the end of Jessop St;
Any ideas, anyone?

It could be the reporter was correct?

From where the 'Sportsman's Inn' stood, opposite the entrance to Wright St; on Jessup St; there stood another two pubs at the opposite end of Wright St; This was at the Wright St; - Mill Lane junction, one pub standing across Mill Lane and practically facing each other. Unfortunately, these two pubs are not named on the 1896 map.

Could one of these have been the missing 'Postman's Inn'?
