An article in the Ripley & Heanor in 1963 on Memories of Langley Mill, includes reference to the visiting circuses:

"Horses, elephants and camels were washed in the canal terminus water, and I have seen them whitewash an elephant. I once remember a young lion cub getting free, and after chasing up and down Langley Mill bottoms in front of the shops, everybody ran for their lives until the animal decided to rest against a lamp post, up which a man had climbed to take refuge. It was recaptured by the circus trainer with a rope net."
