The Clinton Arms closed in 1918
Bertie Severn was Landlord from 1917-1918.

During the 1890s most of the pubs in the village were taken over by the big breweries and became tied houses, only able to sell the beer supplied by the brewery owners. The Clinton Arms was acquired by the home brewery of Daybrook and seens to have done quite well.
Nevertheless, the Clinton Arms, was closed down by the Authorites in 1918 because they considered that Brinsley had too many pubs. As the licensing authorites wrote;
"Brinsley has a population of 1,691 and there are five licensed premises within 700 yards.

WHITE LION (35 yards)
ROBIN HOOD(171 yards)
NEW INN (700 yards)
and PRINCE OF WALES(700 yards)"
after the Clinton Arms was closed down, the landlord, Bertie Severn, received compensation of £70 from the licensing Authorities which was matched by a further £70 from the owners Home Brewery. The Brewery themselves also received compensation from the public purse.
Bertie severn did not remain jobless for long. After the Clinton Arms closed he crossed the road and became landlord of the White Lion for quite a number of years.

from 1919-1927 Bertie Severn was Landlord/licensee of the White Lion although not the oldest pub in Brinsley (that honour goes to the Robin Hood) the White Lion can be traced back to at least the 1860s when it was described as an alehouse "with 9 rooms of which 4 were public rooms" It also had " stabling for 6 horses"
