Shipley Boat Inn Occupants - 1891 Census
replied on: 11/14/2006 11:23:56 AM

The tale we heard re the name-was when it was being purchasd -one of the group asked "Why are you buying this place-it's in the "Middle of Friggin Nowhere"?

I think you will find on every census the Shipley Boat was kept by the Noon family (and even before 1841!) and was still kept by the same family into the 1950's -maybe even after that. Along with the pub at various times they had a farm, boatyard and in later years a Knackers yard. The furthest back I know was Robert Noon b c 1800 took over from Joseph Noon -but I have yet to find if Joseph was Robert's father or Uncle -in 1700's I think the family lived in Leicester. many of them were christened/married/buried at Eastwood -I suppose it was the nearest church -coming through the lanes. Many of the sons through the years had farms and Butchers shops (which were also passed down the generations). The Noons must surely be one of the longest serving licencees in the area who kept the same pub? I have a lot of newspaper articles re this family -having horses stolen, the pub robbed, one commited suicide-all kinds of events

As Suzard states, it is now called MFN, which I believe stands for "Miles from Nowhere!"

Can anyone check the occupants of the pub in the other available censuses, 1841 to 1901?

Ripley and Heanor 23 )ct 1942
Funeral Report of John Noon licensee Boat Inn Shipley Gate
"John Noon died at home on Sunday morning last age 70. He was also a farmer and Horsekeeper and his son William will carry on the concern in its entirity.
The Boat Inn has been the home of the Noon family for several generations as far back as the history of the hostelry can be traced. It was claimed by the late Mr Miller Mundy as Lord of the Manor and rebuilt in 1887 when Mrs Noon mother of the deceased was licensee at that time. In 1908 John Noon, then in business as abutcher at marlpoolcame to reside at the Inn and ultimately acquired the propery which includes the Lodge Room as headquarters of Mundy Grove Lodge of Freemasons."

Research has showed Robert Noon c. 1800 kept the Boat Inn and is listed in Pigots 1835-but possibly had the Inn for some time before that. Before Robert kept it, it was in the hands of John Noon-but have yet to discover the relationship of Robert and John.

The Shipley Boat surely has to hold the record locally for the length of time it was kept by generations one family!

The Boat Inn is now called MFN and (the last time I checked)was owned by a member of the group Showwaddywaddy.
