Earliest Derbys. Marriages by Name and Date
replied on: 4/21/2008 8:52:06 PM In the 1861 census Sarah is widowed and has Mary age 13 living with her. In the 1871 Census I can't find Mary Gillott (Sarah only has her grandson Charles with her) so I would assume that Mary had married by then. So it would seem that only a couple of the marriages listed above would qualify. In the marriages listed for 1868 prospective grooms are Thomas Calladine and Joseph Rawson. It might be worth getting the certificate. On the 1871 census there is the family of Thomas Calladine (age 21), wife Mary (age 21) and daughter Sarah (age 2) listed in Heanor Sue |

replied on: 4/21/2008 6:05:07 PM Thanks for the info Sue. It's the old Heanor problem - so many Gillotts. In fact I am descended from Joseph Gillott the brother of Mary, but received a message via another forum asking whether "my" Mary Gillott married a Thomas Calladine. I do have some Calladines in my tree, but not enough knowledge to know if this via Mary Gillott. Thanks P |

Earliest Derbys. Marriages by Name and Date
replied on: 4/11/2008 7:41:07 AM Thanks for the info. Sue. Much appreciated. Would you please check one more thing on your Phillimore CD for me? Could you quickly look through the White mariages that pre-dated Joseph White & Ann Farnsworth's marriage date of 1742 and let me know if there were any White marriages with the following forenames - John, Edward, George, Samuel and Thomas for the men and Elizabeth, Mary and Ann for the women. Those seem to be the names that reappeared frequently over the generations. You mentioned that I could find out more detailed information about marriages from the church records. Could you please tell me where these records kept? Again ... thanks. Karen |

Earliest Derbys. Marriages by Name and Date
replied on: 4/10/2008 9:34:06 PM The first White marriage I have found in Heanor on my Phillimore's Marriage CD is in 1566 (the register starts 1558). The Phillimore's only lists the married couple and not their parents or any other information. You would have to view the original parish records for that information. However I did find John Boarbanks of Smalley and Elizabeth White 17 May 1767 Edward White and Mary Holden 15 Feb 1774 Samuel Gillott and Suzanna White 19 Apr 1780 Adam Woodward and Phoebe White 5 Jan 1789. As I explained above I can't confirm that their parents are Joseph and Ann but the dates seem that they are in the ballpark. 1st marriage listed on the CD (for Heanor area) for Mellors is the marriage of Joseph White and Mary Mellors (April 6, 1784, that you already have). There is no previous marriage for a Mellor or a Joseph White listed Sue |

Earliest Derbys. Marriages by Name and Date
replied on: 4/10/2008 2:15:21 AM I'm sorry I forgot to mention which part of Derbyshire. It's Heanor, Loscoe and Codnar. It's the really early marriages I am interested in. I just haven't been able to find much info. that predates the late 1700s - early 1800s. I do have a couple of older dates because I know that Joseph White (1759 - 1833) married Mary Mellor (1763 - 1835) on April 6, 1784 in Heanor and I suspect Joseph's father who was also named Joseph White (dob 1717) married an Ann Farnsworth on Nov. 16, 1742 in West Hallam. Joseph and Ann had 9 children and I have only been able to locate marriage dates for 3 of them. I have no information on wedding dates and spouse's names for the other 6 - Elizabeth, Amy, Hannah, Edward, Phoebe and Susannah. I would also dearly love to know who Mary Mellor's (1763 - 1835) parents were, same for Ann Farnsworth and Eliza Marshall and Eliza Abbott (both Eliza's were married to Joseph White (1789 - 1872). Eliza Abbott married him in 1813 in Heanor and she died in 1816. They had 2 children - George (dob 1814) and Dorothy (dob 1815). I can't find spouses for either of them. Eliza Marshall married Joseph in 1817 and they had 8 children. I have spouses for all of them except for Mary (dob 1823), Edward (dob 1825) and Isaac (dob 1833). Is there any marriage information that pre-dates Joseph White and Ann Farnsworth? I would especially love to know who his parents were. I hope I've made sense here. I know it is a lot to ask of you and I will certainly understand if you throw your hands up in frustration. I do appreciate anything you can tell me and hopefully in about a year I will be able to go to England and do some of my own investigating. Karen |
