Licensee Red lion Hotel 1893 -W Paxton
R&H 27 jan 1893
"Thursday evening as Mr W. Paxton, landlord of the Red Lion Hotel Heanor, was returning from Smalley in a trap, the horse shied and plunged into the kerbstone, overturning the trap. Mr Paxton, who is a heavy man, fell onto the road and the horse dashed up Thorpe's Road at a high speed, but was quickly stopped by Mr John Holmes Junior. Mr Paxton was picked up insensible and carried into an adjoining house. He was suffering from cuts on the head and face. Mr Holmes, who is a member of the Heanor Ambulance Class bathed and dresses the wounds and the sufferer was removed to his home in Derby road, where he is progressing favourably. The horse was not injured, but the trap was smashed."

Hi Jenny, sorry for the delay in answering, thanks for the information, most of which I already knew as a result of a visit to the submarine museum at Gosport about five years ago. Ron Hall was my dads cousin but he had not told me much about Ron except that when I was ten he took me to the war memorial at Portsmouth and we hunted through the names until we found Rons entry.
I did not know about the R&H News articles so thanks again for the info.

Hi Cameo,
I found this first report today and Ronald is the grandson of Mr Mrs R. Hogg ?

Ripley and Heanor News
25th February 1944
A LUCKY MISS
The above is a photo of Chief Petty Officer Ronald Hall, whose home is at Beeston, and who is grandson of Mr and Mrs R. Hogg, of High St Loscoe. He has had some narrow escapes during the war. He was off the “Royal Oak” when it went down, but was rescued along with others of the crew. Afterwards he was posted to “King George V” on her maiden voyage. He afterwards volunteered for submarine duty and was posted to the “Simoon” which is now presumed lost. Whilst on the “Simoon” however, he contracted malaria and was in hospital in Cairo. On leaving hospital he had to get 300 miles to rejoin the submarine and when he got to port the vessel had left. He is now on leave before being posted to another ship.

Aye, we have two locations now, where that tragic accident occurred, Cameo. The Langley Mill train station and the railway crossing near the MGO bus depot.
I heard the same story though, but i heard a train was standing at the closed barriers and tooted its whistle loudly as she rode slowly over the lines and the horse went insane with fear.
If the latter IS true, could that sudden high-pitched, shrieking whistle have been thought of as a bit of 'fun' on someone's part?

Any third parties welcome.

What little I know of Margaret was that she was indeed married and had given birth to a child just a few weeks before her death, a daughter I think. Her husband was very worried about the stallion that she was riding and had warned her not to ride it as she was not yet strong enough to control it.
Apparently a train sounded its whistle at the station, the horse was somewhere near the church and bolted in the direction of Heanor, Margaret tried valliently to control it but was thrown, I think into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

I believe she was recently married at the time, but don't quote me on it. If she was, i suppose one of her Grandmothers was named Wood.

Mind you, being upto the neck in the Hardy/Wragg/Stirland quicksand, i couldn't swear on it now-adays.

I remember Margaret, Cameofield. Yes she was thrown and killed near the trainline crossing, near the MGO Bus Depot. But for some reason, i've always remembered that year as 1958. I could be wrong though, but not certain.
I've often remembered that incident over the years. How many remember her now and the accident which caused her death?

Thanks for your response. Stella Hogg was my aunt she eventually married Dennis Fearn of Beeston Notts, they had one child, a son David who lives in Paignton Devon. Stella died of cancer in the first week in March 1993, Dennis died of a broken heart two or three days later and they had a double cremation at Bramcote.
