Smalley Common
replied on: 3/17/2005 11:51:13 AM Yes, there were a couple of old buildings as Jack stated. They are shown on the 1896 O.S. Map. On the road from Ilson, no other buildings stood between them and the Rose and Crown Pub, a short distance away. Azzabuv. |

Smalley Common
replied on: 3/16/2005 10:23:16 PM Not really sure of the status of Smalley Common - should this post be on the West Hallam etc forum? Anyway, a query from Jack Hallam, via the main website? "Have you any info on Smalley Common? As a boy I seem to remember a Gas Holder and Shop selling gas mantles/cookers located on the left hand side of the road approaching the Rose and Crown cross roads from Ilkeston. It was the last house/shop before the cross roads and the building was set at an angle facing towards Ilkeston. Now have I dreamt it or was it there? I cannot ever remember seeing any form of Gas making plant there but the ground around was always unkept as if something had been there." Has anyone got any similar recollections? |
