Extracted from My Village 'Owd Codnor' There were then only five houses on Denby Lane, Mr Pines, The vicarage and three more on the opposite side above the church. The top one was that of the curate, the Revd. George Mallet......Almost opposite the curate's house is a narrow road leading to Searson houses.......There were about half-a-dozen old houses her, built chiefly of stone, and thatched; and attached to my grandfather’s hose was his stockingers shop.' The author refers to childhood memories from about 1864. As a child in the 1960's I lived in the house described here as the curate’s house. My family had lived there since approx 1935? When elderly neighbours were living in a neighbouring cottage and shared local knowledge from the past with my grandfather and father which backs this up.
JMax	Searson Hos? replied on: 1/28/2006 11:50:06 PM Hi, A bit of information which might help you out with the Searson Houses query. The Searson family owned several properties in Codnor. Searson House farm off Codnor Denby Lane had cottages attached to it which could well have been these houses. They are now part of the farm. The Rowarth family, who I believe are still farming there will proabably know. I was born in a house opposite this farm lane in 1961. The house,29 Denby Lane and the other houses in this yard had all belonged to the Searson family prior to this. Infact the farmer still collected rent from some tennants when I was a child. My father eventually purchased all of these properties which are amongst the oldest properties on the lane (older than the church) and have some interesting history associated with them. Miss Connie Searson, I think was the actual owner before this and she lived in the end house of the 'Victorian style three bedroomed houses opposite the church at the bottom of the lane. I understand that she may also have owned these houses. She was a small well dressed elderly lady and she attended Codnor Methodist Chapel where I went with my sisters. Another Mrs Searson, who I believe was related, lived in the very last house on the left hand side before the fields seperate Codnor with Denby Village. George Searson, Milkman from Crosshill may also have been related but I am not so sure of this. I am pretty sure I knew for sure which were 'Searson Houses' but I will keep searching for a memory to confirm this.
suzard Researcher	Searson Hos? replied on: 8/27/2005 9:00:43 PM I have a marriage 2 may 1936 at St Andrews Langley Mill ofCharles William Cresswell 23 Painter of SEARSON HOUSE CODNOR father Samuel Charles Cresswell deceased and Muriel Elizabeth Whitehouse 22 of 48 Thomson St Langley Mill father James Whitehouse deceased. Witnesses John Kew and Vernon Charles Leggett So Searson House was in existence in 1936.
RMMee Moderator	Searson Hos? replied on: 4/11/2005 5:00:33 PM The local Friends Meeting House was located at Codnor Breach, though I'm not sure which building it was (if it still stands). The Howitts, as mentioned, and, before them, the Tantums, were members.
Jennypeg Researcher	Searson Hos? replied on: 4/11/2005 12:48:07 PM Hi Chris, I think the burial ground is in a field belonging to the Farm and some Quakers have had a service there (this is what I've been told) Matlock have the burial records I think about 200 are buried there. also there's a book by Mr Severn about Codnor "My Village - Owd Codnor" that may have information about the Quakers. I think I know where Breach House is but I didn't know there was a Quaker burial ground there....interesting. I'll go and have a look when time permits. Chris
Jennypeg Researcher	Searson Hos? replied on: 4/11/2005 9:44:17 AM Hi Chris, I’ve had a walk round Codnor Denby Lane this morning, the church is on the corner of Crosshill and Codnor Denby Lane (the school was knock down along time ago?) on the other corner the house was called School House (residence of all the school headmasters), if you walk up Codnor Denby Lane just past the church and cemetery on the other side of the road is the New Vicarage (date?) the house next door looks old no name only a number, there’s about 7 or 8 houses all look fairly new and then it’s the Lane leading to Searson’s Farm, and at the top of Denby Lane is Breach House were the Quaker burial ground is and were William Howitts parents were married. The next household the other way is the Vicarage (Henry Middleton, Vicar of Codnor), then the Parish Church and the Boys School. Chrisbrin
Azzabuv	Searson Hos? replied on: 4/6/2005 8:00:57 PM Shown on the 1896 O.S. Map and approximately a quarter of a mile up Denby Lane, from the Loscoe end, stood 'Scarsdale House'. This stood on the left-hand side of the Lane, going up. Searson Hos. (House?) and Scarsdale House could equal a building's name changed over the years? Azzabuv.

chrisbrin	Searson Hos? replied on: 4/5/2005 1:12:05 PM On the 1881 census for Codnor and Loscoe I have family, headed by Joseph Tyler(unemployed labourer), living at Searson Hos. Does anyone know where or what that was? Thanks Chrisbrin
